series of mild culture shocks
England isn’t extremely different from the US, but the experience is still pretty eye-opening for me.
- Sometimes I find it kind of hard to understand people (fml) partly from their accents and even more from their low voices! I know Americans speak incredibly loudly all the time, and I’m probably used to that…but still.
- Another culture shock for me was the amount of Indian people (or brown people in general) that take over London… ESPECIALLY MY HOUSE. omfg. I felt like I was in Jackson Heights this afternoon and tonight at the bar. SERIOUS CULTURE SHOCK. FROM MY OWN PEOPLE. how insane is that?
- having to buy my own toilet paper? WTF. also, there is no full-length mirror in my room. that is simply unacceptable. HOW ELSE AM I SUPPOSED TO STARE AT MYSELF 24/7?
- It’s really strange how things that are so readily available in the US (i.e. toilet paper) are somewhat harder to get here, in one of the most famous cities in the world. Finding cheap plastic hangers was COMPLETELY impossible (I guess they use wooden here…?) The insanely high prices obviously contribute to this, but in the US we’re so used to living this life of luxury even if we aren’t filthy rich. Not having this luxury in an equally-civilized country will take some adjustment!
